Major animation festivals around the world – I

Animation festivals are fast gaining popularity throughout the world. They offer a platform for artists to present their work and find fame & fortune. In the first part of this two-part edition, we bring you the first five animation film festivals across the globe.

Note: The names do not appear in any particular order or ranking. 

Anifest India – (www.tasionline.org)

We begin the list with our very own animation film festival – Anifest. Although the event features entries from Malaysia, Hong Kong and the United States, Anifest India is a national event. Started recently in 2005, the festival has gained momentum in cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa and Delhi. Anifest India 2014 was held in Mumbai from 20-22 August.

Ottawa International Animation Festival – (animationfestival.ca)

The largest animation event in North America began way back in 1976. The Ottawa International Animation Festival holds screening competitions for full length films and animated shorts. The festival has a ‘kids’ jury panel, where the event organisers invite groups of young children to vote on the most popular animation of the year.

Also started in 1982, the Anima film festival is held in Brussels, Belgium every year. It serves as the key showcase for full-length and short film entries from across the world. Anima has an international as well as national section for entries coming in only from Belgium. The goal of Anima is to help professionals, filmmakers and the public to collaborate in bringing together quality work in the field of animation.

Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film – (http://www.itfs.de/en/)

By far the largest and most important animation festival, the Stuttgart Festival for Animated Film began in 1982, and represents all genres of animation and showcases some of the best work done during the year. The festival focuses on artistic films and features young talent from around the world in over nine competition categories. What makes the festival special is that the winner automatically qualifies to be nominated for the Oscars.

Holland Animation Film Festival – (http://www.haff.nl/en/)
Established in 1985, this festival takes place at several locations worldwide. The Holland Animation Film Festival features latest developments and emerging technologies. It organises competitions for internet animation, short films and applied animation. Although it showcases entries from around the world, it is a national film festival in the Netherlands.
